How to Choose the Right Divorce Lawyer
It’s estimated that, somewhere in America, a divorce happens every 36 seconds. A divorce is one of the most stressful processes to go through. Do yourself a favor by hiring a lawyer to represent your best interests in the divorce. Divorce Magazine offers these tips on how to choose the right divorce lawyer for you.
Take your time finding a lawyer.
Although you will be exhausted from the initial stages of the divorce, you need to take the time to interview at least two lawyers to find a good one. Ask your divorced friends, family members, and coworkers for recommendations.
Ask your prospective lawyer when payments are expected. Do you need to pay all at once, or is there a payment plan? Does the lawyer accept credit cards? Ask about fees, and how much the lawyer estimates your divorce case will cost you. You usually need to pay a retainer or initial fee. Ask how much this is. Sometimes, the retainer is refundable. You need to know this in advance.
Ask your lawyer who makes the final decision in advancing your case. Will the lawyer let you make decisions, or does the lawyer expect to run the show? If there are children involved, ask the lawyer about your chances of gaining custody or getting generous visitation rights.
