First, determine what size tank you need, or how many gallons of water it stores. a 40-gallon tank is most popular in the U.S. and would be a great option for a family of four. For larger families, 50, 75, or even 100-gallon tanks are available.

Second, determine the BTUs or how big of a burner you want. A standard 40-gallon water heater has about 40-50,000 BTUS while larger tanks can have 60-70,000 Btus. The more BTUs the water heater has, the faster it will heat water for use.

Third, consider the cost. A 40-gallon tank may be the least expensive option, but if you are looking for a water heater that will last longer, consider an on-demand system. An on-demand system may be more expensive, but it has a longer life expectancy than a regular tank. Luckily, there are options available for any budget.
